Instructor | General Manager, RTA Productions
There was no such thing as a co-op or volunteer program in the 1970s when Rob Carver went to the new local cable station in Vancouver with a half-inch, black and white reel-to-reel videotape of a school project in hand looking for airtime. What followed was one of the first after-school credit programs and a career that led from part-time camera work to national GM, Rogers Television. Never satisfied with one occupation, Rob concurrently worked as a freelance writer, producer and director in the corporate and broadcast sectors, and as a part-time instructor in community college media programs. Having relocated to Toronto, Rob now works as a Sessional Instructor in the RTA School of Media at Ryerson University. Rob is also General Manager of RTA Productions, an in-house media production company that hires students to work on professional projects for both internal and external clients. Having worked in virtually every position behind and in front of the camera, Rob has taught a wide range of courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs at Ryerson including Single-camera and Multi-camera Production, Children’s Television, Media Economics, Advanced Media Management, Media Aesthetics, the Media Business Universe and Special Projects. His research into educational applications of Blu-ray DVD technology was showcased at the 2010 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show in Las Vegas. Rob has won numerous programming awards including a Leo Award for Best Talk and Information Program, Canada; a Bronze Apple Award from the National Educational Media Network, USA; a Silver Globe Award from the Parent’s Choice Foundation, USA; and the Grand Prize in the A&E City Assets Documentary Competition, USA. As Director, Rogers Television BC, he led a highly successful restructuring and repositioning project that saw increases of 67% in audience share, 15% in weekly reach, 60% in sponsorship revenue, as well as substantial positive earned media. Rob holds a MBA from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto and is a recent graduate of the MA Media Production program at Ryerson. He has also completed the Management Development Seminar for Television Executives offered by the NAB and The Media Management Centre, Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University, Chicago. A keen observer of human nature and noted teambuilder, Rob is a Certified Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Administrator and Interpreter.
